Red Wing's Footwear History – Classic 6” Work Boots
Posted By: Rebecca | Published: 11-20-10

Throughout their history the Classic 6 inch Work Boots have served many, from hunters and farmers to those constructing the skyline of America, high on the steels above the cities. Therefore, the most distinguishing feature of the Classic 6 inch Work Boots (as with many of the Red Wing boots) is the white Traction Tred sole, a unique feature first introduced in the 1950's.

The wedge crepe sole was introduced within the Irish Setter hunting boots, providing a durable sole that boasted self-cleaning and non-slip abilities, creating a boot ideal for outdoor activities. This boot was soon adopted by farmers, providing the perfect boot to walk the fields in without ones boot becoming clogged with dirt adding to the weight of the boot. The white feature of the sole also proved very popular with farmers wives as they were able to check the soles of their husbands shoes before letting them in to ensure no mud was brought into the house. You see, the Red Wing work boot wasn't just something that was worn during the day, but as a comfort shoe for the house too, as it was continually comfortable and supporting.

After it's success in the farming industry, the Classic 6” Work Boot became a popular boot amongst the construction workers of America as the non-slip sole allowed for safety when walking the high steel beams of the building constructions.

Retaining this original style, their distinguished white soles, comfortable and fashionable attributes, these boots remain a popular boot for many different purposes, albeit work, casual or dress functions. Red Wing Classic 6” Work Boot Styles include the following:

Style 875 – made of Oro-iginal Leather, this boot has a natural appearance and a fantastic soft surface feel. The properties of the leather also include water, stain and perspiration resistance and is easily treatable with leather cleaner and boot oil.

Style 8139 – the upper of this boot is constructed using Sage Mohave leather, providing the boot with a leather that is both durable and full of character with its texture. Mohave leather is also waterproof and stain resistant, easily treated with nubuck/suede leather cleaning kits.

Style 8140 – the upper of this boot consists of Maize Mustang leather, a durable, hard-wearing leather that can be easily treated with leather cleaners and conditioners.
