The Construction of Barker Shoes – The Finest Craftsmanship

Barker continue to use the finest of materials within their craftsmanship, alongside the same traditions and skills that founded the company, even though modern techniques may have been introduced. The Barker brand evidently want to ensure their customers can rely on a high-quality product that isn't always changing with the fashions.

Furthermore, it isn't just the materials and craftsmen that have been carefully provided in the construction of Barker shoes but the entire working environment too. When it comes to grading leather, a good natural light is needed and also for the matching of colours and a stitching of a consistent quality, all of which have been taken into consideration in the latest Barker factory building.

Barker Welt: a unique Barker version of the traditional welt construction. In order to provide the shoe with a lighter sole and closer sole edge, without compromising the quality of a normal welted shoe, the sole is cemented and not stitched. This alters the making and lasting process in order to construct a shoe of unique qualities.

Moccasin: a truly specialised finish to a shoe that offers a sole that is both flexible and light whilst also enabling a finish to be provided to the shoe that gives it its distinguishing qualities. To create the Moccasin, a “bag” of leather is created by hand sewing an apron to a vamp (the piece of leather that forms the upper of the shoe). This is then dampened before being placed on a last to form the “bag” into the shoe shape. The Moccasin's exceptional comfort comes from the soft leather upper surrounding the entire foot, which is flexible to whatever shape the foot has. Barker have also introduced a padding that lies under the leather at the front of the shoe, for added comfort.

Goodyear Welt: the truly traditional manufacturing method that gives the shoe several beneficial advantages including: exceptional shape retention, easily repairable and an excellent insulator against the cold and heat.
