Celebrate 'Earth Day' With Environmentally Friendly Shoes
Posted By: Rebecca | Published: 04-22-11

Today, 22nd April 2011, is Earth Day, a day in which people are encouraged to take time-out to appreciate and be inspired by the natural environment of the Earth. Founded just over forty years ago by the United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day has come to be celebrated in over 175 countries across the world.

Evidently, it is often difficult to celebrate such days when we live the whirlwind lives that we do, driving our cars down the motorway, watching the TV, drying our hair with a hair-dryer, using spray-on deodorant and so on. However, one way in which you can help the environment is through the shoes you wear, as many footwear brands are beginning to use as many natural materials as possible. So here are our top 2 environmentally friendly footwear brands:

Timberland: On Earth Day, what are Timberland doing? They aren't at work, and not because Earth Day has fallen on Good Friday this year, but because they want to give there bit back to the environment. They have gathered 7,200 volunteers to help make Earth a better planet. But that's not the only reason that Timberland are our top environmentally friendly footwear brand; their shoes are also increasingly environmentally friendly.

Take the Timberland Earthkeeper for example: these shoes have various components within them that are made from organic materials and many parts that are recyclable once the owner has had their wear out of them. Of note is the Green Rubber Outsole which means the sole of the boot is made from up to 42% of recycled rubber! And, when you're finished with your boots, at least of half of it can be used again!

Mel: They are an incredibly popular summer brand at the moment, because of their unique, quirky designs, but the brand is also exceptionally dedicated to the environment. Their shoes are made from PVC Mel-Flex which is an incredibly comfortable material for the foot being both breathable and flexible, but it is also 100% recyclable.

Not only that but if any waste material is created during their manufacturing process, this is recycled into material for the next bulk manufacturing process.

So, do your bit for the environment today and get yourself an environmentally friendly pair of shoes!!
