It's not the first time we've said that flats are coming back but outrageous high heels still remain on the catwalk and many suggest women are addicted to high heels, so just who is backing the flat craze? Well, there's a few celebrities to start with, and with the pressure of tottering down the street followed by hundreds of cameras, who can blame them?
Thus, the question continues, flats or heels? And, it is perhaps these unclear fashion rules that have stopped some women from turning to the comfort of flats. However, one celebrity really gave the flat shoe craze a thumbs up in spectacular style at the recent première of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part One. The beautiful 'Bella', Kirsten Stewart, strolled elegantly down the red carpet in a sensational pair of Jimmy Choo's but was soon snapped wearing some Nike trainers (that looked like they'd been worn a few times before).
What's more, this rebellious act by Stewart hasn't been frowned upon but hailed by women worldwide, because let's face it, every woman has been in her crippling position, and the comfort of those Nikes was obviously too tempting!
Whilst the debate may continue, and probably will for years to come, it is clear that flats are becoming just as much a must-have accessory for certain outfits as heels are. The 'masculine' trend that has swept the fashion world continues and one celebrity who is doing her bit for the flat shoe craze is Alexa Chung.
Recently voted 'Style Icon' at the British Fashion Awards for the second year in a row, Alexa Chung presides as a fashion ambassador and she is regularly spotted wearing flat shoes. Other celebrities have followed suit choosing the more casual loafer styles and the ever-popular ballerina pumps including Pixie Lott, Gwen Stefani and Fearne Cotton.
However, it's not just celebrities who are rebelling as many designers appear to be recognising a woman's need for stylish flat shoes with designers Paul Smith and Marc Jacobs (to name a few) including flat shoe styles in their collections for Spring 2012.
These designers ensure that their shoes aren't bland in comparison to those skyscrapers by injecting them with bold colours and adding oversized embellishments.
Which corner are you in?
