Prestigious footwear brand, Red Wing, were visited by the Senator of Minnesota on his recent tour, with him praising them for their “hallowed” manufacturing in Minnesota. Upon visiting the town of Red Wing, Senator Franken didn't think he'd ever had a pair of the boots, but it was clear that upon leaving he was a converted fan, taking away a pair of their Heritage boots.
Franken has been touring around Minnesota, visiting many places to express how important it is that the curriculum's at schools consist of technology, engineering, maths and science, all of which help to contribute towards the manufacturing workforce, such as that at Red Wing's plant.
Commenting on his trip to Red Wing, Franken said: “I really wanted to visit Red Wing Shoes...They're a hallowed Minnesota manufacturer.”
“If you go to a manufacturing facility, it's very high tech...They need extremely educated people.”
Last week, Franken was taken around Plant No. 2 of the Red Wing manufacturing facilities, where he saw the production of a pair of boots, before visiting the store downtown.
Red Wing's particular success appears to stem from their enthusiasm to train employees to work with Red Wing products. Rather than only employing someone who already knows how to make shoes, Red Wing seek employees that can be trained after they are hired, to meet with Red Wings incredibly high standards.
Speaking about their employment rates, Dave Murphy, the Shoe President, commented that their employment had increased by 8 percent last year. This is unlike many other manufacturers who are finding it hard to fill positions due to there being a lack of 'skilled' employees.
