You may find a lot of people saying that you can never own enough pairs of shoes, and whilst you may think that those people with enough pairs of shoes to wear a different pair every day for a month are ridiculous, their foot health is probably better than those who wear the same shoes everyday.
Wearing the same pair of shoes everyday could increase the risk of developing fungal infections such as athlete's foot. This is because, on average, your feet will be producing an eggcup of sweat everyday, which means that your shoes wont have enough time to dry out before you wear them again the next day.
Speaking about this phenomenon, consultant orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon at Liverpool's Bone and Joint Centre, Chris Walker, comments; “Damp skin is more prone to infection because fungi grow most easily in warm, wet conditions.”
Mike O'Neill from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists adds; “It takes 12 to 18 hours for shoes to dry out after you've worn them, so you should alternate your shoes each day.
“Most women have a few pairs of shoes but men wear the same ones straight for six months...It's the equivalent to wearing the same underpants every day for six months and puts you at risk of fungal infections and smelly feet.”
So, there's your excuse to indulge in at least one more pair of shoes! |
